Different States of User Experience

We are living in the world of multi-channel experiences and engaging every day with different level of experiences such as Web Sites, Software’s, Services, physical products and environments and some other intangible experiences. Human engagement is the goal and human experience is the outcome of experience design and it always Subjective, Ephemeral, intangible. The experience has a different level of states that means the possible and essential engagements of a user with experience.

A : Perception: The ability to see, hear, taste, touch or become aware of something through the senses. This is the way to deliver the experience that engages users perceptions that means engagement to the senses.

Engagement through Sight: A user can engage to experience through sight. Visual design, Photography, Videography, typographies are the best example of this state is other examples.

Engagement through Sound: A user can engage to experience through sound. Music is one of the examples of this state, different kinds of music are giving different levels of experience such as melody, comedy and sentimental.

Engagement through Touch: Don Norman saying about a global cutting knife in his book called Design for Everyday Things. The knife is very expensive but it is beautifully balanced for use. The user would have an awesome experience when they use the knife.

Engagement through Smell: Perfumes are an example of these states

Engagement through Taste: Foods are an example of this state.

B: Action: This means the Engagement of the Body (If there is any action taken by the user in the physical forms to engage the experience). Touching to an interface, mouse click on the text box, type in a form field, playing a game with a joystick and others.

C: Emotion: Engagement of the Heart. Engaging inexperience with different emotion such as Fun, Happy, Sad, and Easy.

D. Cognition: Engagement of the mind with the body. This is the most important state in the experience design. What’s going on in user mind when they are engaging with the product? What is the user thinking now? Create empathy about the user and understand their needs and goals will help a designer in this state to create a good experience.

If you are creating any type of experience and must to include these states in those experiences. Perception, Action are the external engagement and Emotion and Cognition are the internal engagement (what’s going on in the users head). Below is the diagram which explains different aspects of UX design is fit in these 4 states.
